GETM Utilities

Introduction

These pages contains documentation for the GETM utilities. You can use the GETM Users mailing to get help and discuss the utilities. Please send bug reports by email to the maintainers of the utilities. And remember that this is a wiki and that you can help improve it.

Source code location

Presently, getm-utils are (slowly) moving from a subversion (svn) repository located at http://getm.eu/ to a git repository here at sourceforge. While the move is in progress, not all utilities are available for download. The more users and developers engage themselves, the more utilities will be available here.

Build instructions and prerequisites

Many of the utilities are based on scripts, which do not need compilations. However, some utils are written in Fortran or C, and will need compilation before they will work. Before you try to use the tools you should read [PreRequisites] and [BuildInstructions].

List of tools

gvc2zax

Convert GETM (internal) general veritical coordinates to constant z-levels, see [Gvc2Zax].

ncbathy2kml

Visualize your GETM setup in GoogleEarth. Create mask input for the subdivision tool. Details, comments and howto: [Ncbathy2Kml]
Includes a script to search a curvilinear GETM bathymetry for the point closest to a given position, see [FindNearestCpoint].

Subdomain Division

Written in Matlab, this utility can create the necessary files for GETM to run in parallel, i.e. machinefile and parallel.inp. More info, see [SubdomainDivision]

ncscatter

Extract data like stations, transects or regions from a bunch of GETM netcdf outputfiles. Nscatter works independent of the underlying [SubdomainDivision]. For more information and examples, see [ncscatter].

ncmerge

Tool to combine subdomain ([SubdomainDivision]) netcdf-files to a larger single file. For more see [ncmerge].

Tidal boundary condition generation

Create tidal boundary conditions for your GETM setup. Boundary conditions are made Flather-style, i.e. with both elevation and velocity components. See [OtpsTides] for more info.

Other tools

Besides the tools hosted here at Sourceforge there are also some other tools that are useful for GETM users. These are listed below.

PyNcview

PyNcView is a cross-platform NetCDF viewer written in Python. It provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface to the creation of animations and publication-quality figures.

This is a really helpful tool for plotting GETM results. Output can be made in professional quality making ready-for-print figures.

Octant

Ocean modelling toolbox octant (see http://code.google.com/p/octant for more information). See [octant]
