Hi, Finally after what felt like ages, mainly because it was ages, I have released Getleft 1.2. Really, it is going to be weird not having that little voice at the back of my mind saying, well shouting "are we there yet?" As usual comments are welcome, even bad ones, don't worry, they can hardly be worse than mine. So, ready or not, here it is: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html Share the wonders, Andres |

Hi, Back in January I told you I was hoping for a 'short' beta period, so you were still thinking I was at all reliable, now you know better. This is the first release canditate for version 1.2, about time considering the first alpha was released over two years ago and, depending on the bugs I find, I may yet release another one. In order to get there I am going to need your help: * Please, report any bugs you find. I haven't made a stable release in three years, so I would like this one to be rock solid. Don't think that someone else will report the bug, they won't. (Trust me, they really won't) * Some of the translations are very dated and, in most cases, I haven't heard from the people who made them in years. If you would like to use Getleft in your mother tongue, please e-mail me. * I would like to know what you find most jarring about the user interface. From the begining I have tried to make Getleft as easy to use as I could think of. So if you think you are working too hard to download a site or you find that the way Getleft behaves is weird, please, tell me about it. I would specially like to hear from Mac users, my experience with MacOS X is quite limited, so I don't really know what you expect from a program. The changes since the last version: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/changes.html And to download: http://personal.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/ Share the wonders, Andres |

Hi, welcome back. With this release, Getleft now does everything I wanted it to do for version 1.2 and, as far as I know, there are no bugs but I am certain there must be a few lurking around. So I still expect to release another development version, another beta or release candidate, and then go for the final 1.2. I would specially like to hear from Mac users, my experience with MacOS X is quite limited, so I don't really know what you expect from a program. Share the wonders, Andres Changes: * Enhancement: I have changed the icons for, I hope, better looking ones. Actually, you will only be able to see them if you use a Getleft binary or have either the TkImg or TkPng, which you do if you have ActiveTcl installed. If you don't, Getleft will fall back to the 'classic' buttons. A side effect is that you can no longer choose the set of icons to use, I hope you didn't like the HiColor set too much. * New feature: In Linux, I have added an entry to the 'Tools' menu to change the theme to use, it is there mainly in case the KDE skin doesn't work for you. * Enhancement: I have changed the dialog to enter urls a bit. * Enhancement: Updated the tablelist widget to version 4.6 released by Csaba Nemethi. * Enhancement: Suddenly, I realized that the dialog to choose links wasn't very user-friendly, so I added a help button and rewrote the section of the help file that describes it. Better late than never I guess. * Enhancement: I changed the color the urls in the queue get during an automatic download, now I use the same color as when they are selected, which may be a bit confusing, but it will certainly look better. * New feature: I have improved the 'install.tcl' script so that it allows you to create a desktop icon and menu entry for Getleft. The real work is made by the Portland utilities but, since distros are still getting ready for this utilities, they may or may not work for you. Even if they do, you may have to log out and back in. As usual, comments are welcome. * Bug fix: I noticed a review at PCWorld Poland, I have no idea what it says but, considering the screenshot clearly shows Getleft malfuctioning, it can't be too flattering. * Bug fix: The context menu in the 'Choose links' dialog still had bold fonts. * Bug fix: Hard as it is to believe, you could still get an error about the registry in Windows, this is quickly becoming Getleft's most fixed bug, but don't worry, I will keep on fixing it at no extra charge. * Bug fix: In the dialog to choose directories in Linux, you could get into trouble trying to get into a directory for which you didn't have the right permissions. Likewise you could choose a directory for which you didn't have write permissions. |

Hi, I have just released the first of what I hope will be a short beta series of releases. The main changes since the last version: * Thanks to a feature request by Thomas Ritzerfeld, I have made a 'GetleftToGo' package that can be run from USB memory sticks. * I have created a binary package for Linux x86, using TclKit lite, it includes Tcl/Tk 8.5, with anti-aliased fonts, and both Tile and TileQT. * Bug fix: The option to get a map of a site didn't work. You can get the a list with the changes: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/changes.html To download: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html Please, let me know if you have any trouble with Getleft. Hi, Again a long, long time since the last release, but I hope you will like it. The main change since the last version is that I now use the Tile extension for the user interface, which should give Getleft a better look. Thanks to Tile, I have also been able to port Getleft to MacOS X, even if it is more an experiment than anything else. Hi, Just in case I haven't add more bugs than I fixed, I am doing a new beta release, if nothing big breaks, I will be releasing 1.1.2 final in about a week. The changes in this version are: Enhancement: Michael Kim has updated his Korean translation. Enhancement: If you ever tried to use the key that opens the context menu in the window you are on, you will be happy to know it should now work. Enhancement: Context menus are now complete with key accerelators, at least they are if you use either English or Spanish, the other languages will have to wait until the translations get updated. Enhancement: In the context menu in the 'Choose File' dialog, there is now a new entry to put in the queue all the selected links, as a directory, it will use the last one appending the description of the link in the dialog. Bug fix: Aighaid and Sam Palmer told me that the latest beta wouldn't start up in Windows 98. Bug fix: It seems that Windows doesn't like filenames like 'com1.txt' Bug fix: Getleft would crash on start up if you had entered an Url with ';' in it. Enhancement: Updated the Help System to version 1.5 released by Andrei A. Gratchev Enhancement: Made some small changes in the way the entries in the 'Enter URL' dialog work, specially in how the selection is treated. If you don't think it works as it should, don't forget to complain As usual, you can download it at: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html Share the wonders, Andres |

Hi, It's been a real long time since the last release, eight months, I am sorry about it but, for different reasons, I haven't had the time to develop Getleft. Despite of all the time it took to develop, there is not a lot that is new, mainly a few bug fixes, like being able in Windows to download directories with names like 'com1' and behaving a lot better when the downloading levels are limited. For the full change log: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/changes.html And to download: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html If you downloaded the last version of Getleft, you may remember my talking about how much I loved Farscape, a Tv series that had been canceled and how the fans were still hoping for more episodes to be made. I am glad to report victory, a new for hour miniseries has just been filmed, there is still a lot of postproduction to be made, and I don't know yet when or where it will air, but it is certainly coming. I am quite certain some of you must have thought I was crazy to care so much about something that trivial, and you are right, but why don't you give it a chance? In USA and UK you can watch it at the Sci-fi channel, in Canada at the Space Channel and in Spain at Showtime Extreme. I don't know about other countries, but if I have managed to make you curious, please check. And if you find you like the series, please don't forget to visit the 'Watch Farscape' site: http://www.watchfarscape.com And remember, please let me know if Getleft gives you any trouble. Hi, You may have noticed that I have taken a long time to release this beta, there is a reason for it, one that you probably don't care about but, tough luck, I am going to tell you anyway. You see, a couple months ago I got my hands into the complete first season of a Tv series called Farscape, the truth is I gave it as a birthday present to one of my brothers because I thought that he would like it and, hopefully, that I would be able to borrow it and watch it myself. So watch we did, and in no time at all we had all the available DVDs and I had to force myself to watch only one episode a day because I wanted them to last and, specially, because wondering 'But..., what are they going to do now?!!!' is part of the fun. As a long time fan of other science fiction Tv series like Star Trek and Babylon 5, I hope you will believe me when I say that Farscape is the best science fiction Tv series ever. I had never been so much into a show of any kind, I have no idea how they have managed it, but somehow they have made me care deeply about these characters, when they are doing well I am happy for them, when things go bad for them, which they sometimes do despite the mostly comedy feel of the series, I feel their pain. I have brief moments of sanity when I tell myself, 'Get a grip, they are not real!', but fortunately, they are brief moments of sanity, so I go on enjoying the series. Apart from thinking that I am plain crazy, you may be wondering what this has to do with the release being so late, well, as I said I watched one episode a day so all my non essential free time activities took a dive, I mean, who can possibly care about finding a stupid bug with the recursion code when you can be with your friends repelling the assault of an indestructible scarran dreadnought? The bad news for me is that last week I finished watching all the DVDs available in Europe and I will have to wait until the end of June for my next fix, otherwise there would have been no release yet. The worse news for anyone with taste for quality Tv is that the series has been canceled at the end of the fourth season, probably because one of the things that makes this series great, the tight continuity between episodes, makes it harder for new viewers to get into it or watch the odd episode. But you can believe me, it is well worth the effort. Now, I will be the first to admit that the first half of the fourth season was a bit of a disappointment, not because it is bad, it isn't, some of the episodes are great, but because season three is exceptional, from the beginning to the end, and between exceptional and good there is clear difference. The second half of the season, though, is as good or better than anything they had previously done, and I have no doubt the already plotted fifth season would have been something to treasure. You may also be wondering why I am telling you these things, the point is that the fans and the Jim Henson company that produces the show haven't given up hoping that there will be a fifth season, and for that we need to attract new viewers to the show, so why don't you give it a shot?, in USA you can watch it at the Sci-fi channel, in the UK at the BBC and in Spain at Showtime Extreme. I don't know about other countries but if I have managed to make you curious, please check. And if you find you like the series, please don't forget to visit this site. Now on to boring things: * I have got two reports of a problem in Win2k, something about the wrapped version of Getleft not playing right with NTFS systems, unfortunately I haven't been able to replicate it, so if you are having any problem or you have any insight about it, please let me know. * Remember, this is a beta, please let me know if you run into any trouble. Hi, Finally, after almost four months of, lets say, hard work I think version 1.1 is ready. As least as ready as it will ever be, as there is nothing like making a final release for bugs to appear. Anyway, I hope you like, and if you don't, as usual, don't forget to complain. Main changes since the last beta are: - Enhancement: The windows executable, is now created using the newest TclKit, based on Tcl/Tk 8.4.2 which has just been released. - Enhancement: Updated the tablelist widget to version 3.1 released by Csaba Nemethi. - Bug fix: Dennis Daniels reported that if he closed the help window while it is drawing itself, he would get an error. - Enhancement: Dennis Daniels suggested that when the url queue in the main window gets the focus by hitting the tab key, the active url should be clearly highlighted. While I was at it I also made the buttons raise when they get the focus. - Bug fix: After getting the map of a site trying to put a url from it in the queue would raise an error. - Bug fix: The subdialog to create a directory in Linux while selecting the directory in which to save the download wouldn't work. - Bug fix: If you are still using Tcl/Tk version 8.3.x, which is still very common among Linux distributors, you may have got an error when trying to set the default browser. To download: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html Have fun, Andres |

Hi, So, here is the third beta, hopefully it will be the last, and it will be unless so big problem, or many little ones appear. No big changes since the last version, but I hope you will like them: * Enhancement: Due to a suggestion by Dennis Daniels I have added shortcuts to button in the dialog windows, so far you can only see them in the English and Spanish translations, the rest will have to wait until the translations are updated. * Enhancement: In the right-click menu in the 'Site log' window you will see an entry to launch a browser to read the local copy of the downloaded site. * Enhancement: The scroll bars in the main window will only appear when needed. * Enhancement: When uninstalling the 'full' version for Windows, you will be asked if you want to delete your log files, if you do Getleft won't leave any files behind, if you will install a newer version, answer no. * Bug fix: You could delete the url being downloaded from the queue by hitting 'delete' on it. * Bug fix: The option to limit the levels Getleft will follow wasn't being saved in the default options. As usual, you can download it at: http://personal1.iddeo.es/andresgarci/getleft/english/download.html Have fun, Andres |
