Mmh, I always thought namespace nodes were optional in XPath 2.0 but required in XSLT 2.0. But I was not able to find the right verse in [XSLT2]. At least §5.7.3 or xsl:namespace suggest namespace nodes are required in XSLT 2.0, but I didn't find that for sure.
