  I didn't know that.  So I guess you are right, it is totally
superfluous.

  So if I understand right, the idea is that caching is on by default,
and to allow in the future more control on caching through flags. 
IMHO, it makes sense, against the Saxon way to not perform caching,
just allowing the user to keep track of the compiled scripts.
