Yep, he's sorted me out w.r.t to the JAI API.  It's now just waiting for
someone brave enough to decide whether the changes can go in or not.

The code took quite a while to get my head around, I'd be willing to go
further and refactor it a bit (break up the giant readRaster method in
to smaller pieces) to make it a bit more understandable if people were
comfortable with that level of change.  For now, all I did was slight
tweaks to the way the variables are used/assigned to make the intent a
bit clearer.
