[Geotools-devel] Some changes to improve GeoPackage vector reading performance

Hi,
as you might know GeoPackage is now a supported format. However, reading
performance,
even after adding the spatial index support, has been less than stellar,
slower than postgis,
and significantly slower than shapefile.

I've made a number of changes to it, some simple ones already committed on
master, and some larger that
need review (and might not be backportable) in this PR:

I've setup some benchmarks comparing GeoPackage before and after, and with
PostGIS and Shapefile,

Executive summary: with the changes GeoPackage gets similar (or better)
performance to PostGIS, however trying to render
millions of vectors in a small map Shapefile is just in another league, not
sure much can be done about it (but I'm still
looking into it ;-) )

That said, PostGIS is not currently benefiting of TWKB and binary
transport, so once someone gets resources
to work on that, well, PostGIS might take another leap and kiss GeoPackage
goodbye :-p
