Thanks, I will give that a try.

If necessary doing conversions is not a problem.  We have a fixed mapping
structure that will be used.  If we need to take the data through a
conversion and save it in a "pre processed" format to make it more efficient
we can do that.  Is there a format that is better than directly reading
shape files each time?  Can the data be pre-processed for a more effecient
application?
