I'm setting up Geomview on new Win10 laptop, under the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2) subsystem, with the default Ubuntu image and packages. Everything works as you might expect... except OpenGL. Running $ which geomview /usr/bin/geomview $ geomview & gets a blank camera viewport the colour of the set background colour. (And opening up a new camera segfaults Geomview.) Running geomview -noopengl & works as you might expect; the clock, SaVi etc. all draw as intended. I'm glad that flag is still there... Any hints on how to figure out what broke where in which driver? Geomview installed as a package with all dependencies without complaint, so there's nothing obvious there. The X client seems somehow internal to WSL2, rather than needing an extra like Xming, which I've had to use previously, suggesting it's likely something to do with that. thanks Lloyd Wood SaVi for Geomview http://savi.sf.net/ |

For those who may be interested, I have used Geomview, in conjunction with the StageTools module, to create visualizations of atomic orbitals, including videos. The web page is located here: http://lapiet.info/mathphys/AO/ao_plotting.html My only concern is that Geomview does not perform anti-aliasing and thus some graphics may contain "jaggies" when rotated or tranformed. But otherwise, Geomview is a superb tool for this type of work. |

I stumbled across a video suggesting a variant of SaVi has been modified to simulate intersatellite links -- functionality which doesn't yet exist in mainstream SaVi releases. A video showing Geomview demonstrating it on current constellations with a ridiculously large number of satellites is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M49yyJ0o5YU This is related to some work presented to the Internet Engineering Task Force at IETF 112 in November 2021. https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/112/materials/slides-112-rtgwg-3-satelite-semantic-addressing-00 But, other than that, I know nothing about this SaVi variant or its capabilities, other than knowing that seeing satellite names and the constellation help text window in that video means that the modifications start from a base of SaVi post version 1.4.1. I did find it interesting comparing this demonstration of SaVi in 2021 with an early video of SaVi from 1996 (thanks, Tamara!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0UThhgVtKg ...not least of which is that everything is running over Windows (with XMing for display on the Ubuntu linux subsystem) these days. best Lloyd Wood llo...@us... It looks as though this bug only prevents writing-out geom objects that use a feature which is probably not widely used (if ever): INST objects which contain an array of *texture-map* transformations ("txtransforms"). The common kind of INST has geometric transforms instead. We didn't use txtransforms in any of the prepackaged data examples. It's possible that nobody ever did use that feature. I think the attached patch may fix this bug, FWIW. Thanks, David. you previously reported this in January 2019 https://sourceforge.net/p/geomview/mailman/geomview-users/?viewmonth=201901 but the 1.9.5 geomview package of course predates that first report by some years. I presume you built 1.9.5? I'm not sure where active geomview development is at this point (sourceforge cvs is now read-only) - there was a git repository? So I haven't yet checked an active source tree. regards Lloyd Wood http://savi.sf.net/ > On 25 Oct 2021, at 20:44, David Binderman <dc...@ho...> wrote: > > > Hello there, > > Source code is > > if(inst->tlist != NULL || inst->tlisthandle != NULL) { > PoolFPrint(pool, outf, "transforms "); > ok &= GeomStreamOut(pool, inst->tlisthandle, inst->tlist); > } else if(inst->tlist != NULL || inst->tlisthandle != NULL) { > PoolFPrint(pool, outf, "txtransforms "); > |

The following website may be of interest to Geomview users: https://ayapin-film.sakura.ne.jp/Gnuplot/Tips/geomview.html Basically, the author has written a utility that converts a Gnuplot table into a Geomview mesh file. This allows the use of Gnuplot to create Geomview objects. The entire process is automated within a Gnuplot script file. The website is written in Japanese but the example scripts are in English. The idea is very similar to the StageTools module for Geomview: http://www.math.union.edu/software/StageTools/ The Gnuplot --> Geomview program could also be modified by the user to convert other text-delimited formats. Note that some of the example scripts contain syntax errors but these are easily corrected. FR |

Does anyone know if the Pisces module for Geomview is still in existence? It is mentioned in this post from the Geomview list: https://geomview.sourceforge.io/docs/sgarchive/msg04333.shtml The link given in the post is dead. It has been a long time since then but it is possible that the source for Pisces is still available. |

I know these programs exist, but that's about the size of it. I understand that support for this was introduced by Claus in Geomview 1.9.0. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqsis https://sourceforge.net/projects/pixie/Pixie http://www.renderpixie.com/pixie_renderer.html https://www.3delight.com/ To quote https://sourceforge.net/p/geomview/mailman/geomview-users/thread/463...@ma.../ - the RenderMan MG-backend now supports textures. This will not work with the old Blue-Moon tools, but should work with Aqsis, 3Delight and Pixie, and probably with other RenderMan compliant shaders as well. To use texturing with the RenderMan snapshots produced by Geomview one needs to compile the texture aware RenderMan-shaders that come with Geomview; I have written shaders which emulate the OpenGL application methods GL_MODULATE, GL_DECAL, GL_BLEND and GL_REPLACE. Actually, GL_MODULATE is already implemented in the "paintedplastic" shader, but not for constant shading. The shaders are located in the "data/shaders/" directory. Hi, Not sure why the zefsa-produced file is crashing geomview. These scripts were created back in the late 90s. They worked back then.... If you let me know what if anything is wrong with the .off file, I can try to fix it. Not loading and not producing the desired visual output is not a preferred fix. We have an odd test case of an oogl file loadingan off file and promptly crashing geomview when loaded.(The files were generated by Zefsa, a molecular structuregenerator using Geomview as a viewer.) Files and instructions how to reproduce this crash are at http://www.geomview.org/dev/geomview-zefsa-output-segfault.tar.gz The crash can be avoided by simply renaming the dodecahedron fileso that it isn't loaded. I haven't gotten any further beyond creating this reproductiontestcase and howto, and thinking that Geomview's parsershouldn't crash on input, while zefsa shouldn't generate outputthat crashes geomview... thanks to Jiang for reporting this. Further insights welcome. regards Lloyd Wood http://savi.sf.net/ |

There is a color grading along the z-axis with the outer sphere being 67% transparent. Jorge, The SaVi geomview add-on basically does nothing but drawspheres (the Earth) and cones (satellite coverage beams). That might give you some ideas. Ah, thanks again. It appears I shouldn't have been using the legacy -ansi flag (which I added in a belated fit of cleanup rigour for the SaVi 1.4 releases) but the clearer -std=c89 instead, which might have made slightly more retrospective sense given SaVi's origin in the mid-90s - but neither flag accounts for or allows the added POSIX library use. Looking at compile warnings, -ansi seems to map to -std=c99 these days, but excludes POSIX? I'm not seeing that implicit build warning on my systems (gcc 7.4, 8.3, and Raspbian 4.9ish) Not specifying -ansi or -std= means that what is not forbidden is allowed, and the POSIX is accepted by default without requiring another gcc flag, I think. cheers Lloyd Wood http://savi.sf.net/ On Saturday, 15 June 2019, 22:48:24 GMT+10, Adrian Rossiter <ad...@an...> wrote: Hi Lloyd On Sat, 15 Jun 2019, llo...@ya... wrote: > # DEBUGFLAGS = -Wall -Wextra -Wconversion -pedantic -ansi > > The -ansi flag caused SaVi to segfault on writing to the geomview pipe > with recent gcc, removing that flag fixed it. But why? gcc 7.3 or later If you look at the build warnings you will see gv_utils.c: In function ‘gv_stream_init_proc’: gv_utils.c:93:11: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘fileno’; did you mean ‘fopen’? [-Wimplicit-function-declaration] fdout = fileno(stdout); ^~~~~~ fopen It appears that the solution is to define _POSIX_C_SOURCE, e.g. make CC="gcc -Wall -Wextra -Wconversion -pedantic -ansi -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE" ARCH=ubuntu The resulting binary then runs correctly.
