There are  typos above, there should be a SPACE after "cvs" and before 
"checkout" and between "checkout" and "generguide".

One one line, try:
cvs -d :joh...@cv...:/cvsroot/generguide checkout generguide

I'll write the line again with SPACE to try and avoid any mail formating 
problems:
cvsSPACE-dSPACE:joh...@cv...:/cvsroot/generguideSPACEcheckoutSPACEgenerguide
