Info about that found here: http://borges-dms.sourceforge.net/ Generguide functionalities are very interesting and the Configuration Builder quite handy. "Old" Borges proposes a similar mechanism through profiling based on the exclusion of elements with specific "condition" attributes. The advantage of generguide approach is that it is completely DTD independent. I have also always wondered how Borges could import modules located outside of its own projects. Generguide includes from URIs looks brilliant to me. Finally, the fact that Borges V2 plans to extensively use xinclude makes both projects merge more likely to happen in a smooth way. So I'd be glad we work together so that generguide functionalities are integrated into Borges V2 and Borges V2 possibilities are available to generguide projects. As I see it, generguide offers two distinct original features: 1) ability to replace locally included modules by external modules referenced by a URI. 2) ability to exclude modules from the master document based on the modules IDs, with a simple inheritance mechanism. To start with, I suggest you the following: 1) Add external modules references functionality to http://borges-dms.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BorgesSpecs 2) Extend profiling mechanism features in http://borges-dms.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BorgesSpecs and http://borges-dms.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?BorgesTechSpecs (Profiling sections) Looking forward working with you, Camille. > I came across your project > http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/doc/project/Borges/ as I was installing > Mandrake 10.0 and noticed that Borges is quite similar to a project I've > been working on: http://generguide.sourceforge.net . > > Our aim with generguide was to: > 1. Hello Borges people, I came across your project http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/doc/project/Borges/ as I was installing Mandrake 10.0 and noticed that Borges is quite similar to a project I've been working on: http://generguide.sourceforge.net . Our aim with generguide was to: 1. Produce a generic software developers guide 2. Produce a documentation system where you can selectively build a document from sections of a master document based on a configuration file. We written a Web Interface to the configuration file so that you can build it on the fly: http://www.gisontheweb.com:8080/~cameron/cgi-bin/processconfig.pl Anyway, it seems silly to develop two competing systems in parallel and I'm like to work out a way to merge the two projects. Are you interested? |

Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

I like this approach, however I know that sag (system administration guide), nag (network administration guide), lag (linux administration guide) are used by redhat for documentation attached to their distributions. Even if these names are not trademarked it can be confusing for people if we will use them in our project. I am afraid I don't have better idea though. maybe: 'systools' I am also sending this message to mailing list , maybe Sean have some idea. I don't think it fits into the Developer's Guide. However, maybe it could be the first document in a System Adminitrator's Guide, or a Linux User's Guide or something. This brings us to the next stage of Generguide, which is how do we handle the repositories for different projects. Maybe we should change generguide directory to: generguide/guide/software_developers_guide or generguide/guide/sdg and create generguide/sag (system administrators guide) or similar for your mail filter howto. -- Cameron Shorter http://cameron.shorter.net Open Source Developer http://generguide.sourceforge.net http://mapbuilder.sourceforge.net http://geotools.org Senior Software Engineer http://www.adi-limited.com |

We are excited to announce that we have our first public release of http://generguide.sourceforge.net . What is generguide? =============== Generguide allows you to selectively merge modular docbook documentation from around the web based. The Generguide Configuration file is used over-ride Modular Document <xinclude> references and force module files to be imported from another location, or not be imported at all. See the following URL for a dynamic demonstration: http://www.gisontheweb.com:8080/~cameron/cgi-bin/processconfig.pl Generguide is particularly useful for tailoring generic business processes. 80% of business processes are common across the industry. With generguide, common documentation can be edited collectively and referenced over the web. This means your business need only focus on the 20% of documentation specific to your company. We use generguide to tailor a Generic Software Developer's Guide: http://generguide.sourceforge.net/developersguide/developersguide.html Generguide builds upon Docbook XML, xinclude, XSLT, and related technologies. Status of version 0.2 =============== Generguide 0.2 is fully functional. You can see it working at: http://www.gisontheweb.com:8080/~cameron/cgi-bin/processconfig.pl We still consider it alpha quality and I suggest you wait until version 0.3 before committing your business to it. They are a few design issues which we would like help with and which may change the structure of our configuration files and the way we use docbook. Goals for version 0.2 ================ * Find and network with people interested in similar concepts. * Get future users to join our email lists and help refine our use cases. * Find Docbook and XSL Gurus who will review our design and advice us on some design issues. Are you a docbook or XSL guru? ======================== We want design advice on the following issues: 1. How should we implement variables within our documentation? Currently we use ENTITIES like &project_name; however entity files are not XML and hence hard to process. We are considering extending the Docbook schema to add a <variable> tag. 2. Generguide uses modular docbook, which means a docbook file can include another docbook node using <xinclude href="another_section.xml">. However, we have run into problems when linking from one module to another because it causes invalid xml. Ie, when the main doc contains <link linkend="an_id_from_another_section">. What should we do to avoid getting invalid XML? Looking for a host ============== We are looking for somewhere to host our generguide demonstration site, currently living at: http://www.gisontheweb.com:8080/~cameron/cgi-bin/processconfig.pl Contact us ======== Please let us know what you think about generguide. We haven't talked with many people about generguide yet and would like to know if we are onto a good idea or not. Join one of our email lists: http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=83647 Or email me direct: cameron AT shorter.net Hope to be talking with you soon. -- Cameron Shorter http://cameron.shorter.net Open Source Developer http://generguide.sourceforge.net http://mapbuilder.sourceforge.net http://geotools.org Senior Software Engineer http://www.adi-limited.com |
