No

I would like to see "response to environmental enrichment" added to the GO ontology under the parent term “response to external stimulus” (GO:0009605). The definition could be "Any process that results in a change in state or activity of an organism (in terms of movement, secretion, enzyme production, gene expression, etc.) as a result of a change in the environment. An example can be found in PMID:23644055. A narrow synonym would be "response to the introduction of novel objects".

    Hi Stan,

The definition of your proposed terms ("...as a result of a change in the environment.") is too similar to that of its parent ("...as a result of an external stimulus.") that I am reluctant to add it as is. How about, "...as a result of increased external stimulus provided for the purpose of brain stimulation." ? We're trying to represent the assay 'environmental enrichment' in a biological process term so it requires some tweaking.

    What do you think?

    Tanya

    Hi Stan,

Would my modified definition work for you?

    Thanks,

    Tanya

Hi Tanya, How about "...as a result of the introduction of novel objects into the environment."? Stan

Is it always 'novel objects' ? You requested the synonym "response to the introduction of novel objects" to be a narrow one, which is why I ask.

The novel objects is part of it. From PMID:25934034: Enriched environment (EE) refers to housing conditions in which a combination of complex inanimate and social stimulations is provided to stimulate curiosity and exploration.

    How about:

Any process that results in a change in state or activity of an organism (in terms of movement, secretion, enzyme production, gene expression, etc.) as a result of the provision of a combination of complex inanimate and social stimulations in the organism's housing environment.

    Okay, that sounds good.
