GO:0007269 neurotransmitter secretion
can be evoked by an action potential or occur spontaneously without electrical or chemical stimulation - both are described in the literature and in PMID: 21334193
the case is made that “spontaneous and evoked neurotransmission comprise independent neuronal signal transduction pathways that may operate in a spatially segregated manner”.

Many neurophysiological studies talk separately about each mode of secretion / release, so I think we need child terms to GO:0007269 neurotransmitter secretion such as:

1) spontaneous neurotransmitter secretion
2) evoked neurotransmitter secretion

Thanks,
Paul
