Gemsites Update

There is a major update coming for Gemsites that consists of a major structural change. We have a little post about it here:
http://gemsites.jcomserv.net/article.php?a=24

Basically we have decided to turn our code base into a blog/photo-blog solution that uses XHTML/CSS instead of a Slash clone, after a long email discussion with Rob Malda, esteemed Slashdot founder. Stay tuned as we get our ducks in a row for GS 2.0

Gemsites 1.2 Released

Gemsites 1.2 has been released!

Changes include subscription features added to this PHP content management system. We've tweaked the way data flows now so you can run the package register_globals OFF.

Subscribers of *your* site can now see the news before it comes online, and they can comment on it. They also get to see *subscriber news* that you can post directly to the subscriber news feed. That's not all. We've tweaked several other parts of the code that quickly replaces the old v1.1 code, at no risk to your previous install.... read more

Gemsites v1.1 Released

Gemsites v1.1 has released our first package!
Gemsites is a Slashdot clone running with PHP, using a MySQL backend database and it complies with XHTML 1.0 Strict.

Nearly all of the features from Slash are in this release, and some are still on the backburner.

We have added safe image uploading. Images are stored in the database until they are approved by admins! Now you don't have to worry about trolls stuffing your ftp with undesirables.... read more

CSS Tutorial

Gemsites has a fairly detailed CSS/PHP tutorial up: http://gordie.ca/article.php?a=257

The purpose of the tutorial is to demonstrate how we add normalized "farkisms" to titles of stories, keeping XHTML standards, and using CSS, PHP & MySQL.

The main focus of this tutorial is how to use a normalized database to write valid CSS.
