Today I noticed that geeqie has a rather odd (fat, scaled?) pin icon on
the toolbar. It might be some odd icon/theme issue, too, but I'll post
this to geeqie since that's where I see it.

I'm pretty sure that is a theme mismatch.
The slightly smaller icons in your theme cause the older bigger icon to appear to be squished.
GeeQie is using the same old Pin icon from GQView (you probably already know that if you unpin the toolbar detaches) but all the other icons are (cleverly) using the standard GTK STOCK icons and using whatever icons are available from within your theme. If you were using a High Contrast Black theme with Large fonts the problem would be even more obvious.
A potential solution to this would be to draw up another pin icon that better matched your theme. Drawing it in SVG would help too. No one really uses that Pin idea anymore though.
If I were a GQView/GeeQie developer I think I might replace the icon with a standard checkbox widget.
