I know that there are two PICs installed on ATs and beyond... what I want to say is that the binary representation of EOI is 0x20 so the End_IRQ should be something like this: void End_IRQ( struct Interrupt_State* state ) { int irq = state->intNum - FIRST_EXTERNAL_INT; short int EOI = 0x20; if ( irq < 8 ) { // Specific EOI to master PIC Out_Byte( 0x20, EOI ); } else { // Specific EOI to slave PIC, then to master (cascade line) Out_Byte( 0xA0, EOI ); Out_Byte( 0x20, EOI ); } } Any suggestions? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? When PIC routes an interrupt to a processor, it disables all the interrupts (with lower priorities) until interrupt handler tells PIC that it finishes handling. that command, EOI - EndOfInterrupt, is used exactly for that purpose: telling PIC that interrupt has been processed and PIC may continue. So every IRQ handler must send EOI command to the PIC. Now, you must know that there are more then one PIC installed on the PC. Usually, there are two of them. Second PIC is connected to the IRQ 2 of the first PIC, making so-called 'cascading'. Therefore, all IRQs coming from second PIC, are in between IRQ 1 and IRQ 3 (of the first PIC) by priority. And if the interrupt comes from the second PIC, you must send EOI to both PICs since both PICs are 'locked'. hope i'm not saying a bullshit, sergey. --- Behrang Saeedzadeh <beh...@ya...> wrote: > Hi > > Thanks for the information. Hi Thanks for the information. One more thing... What is the exact job of End_IRQ function implemented in irq.c? I was reading some documents and source code and it was said that to send the EOI command to the PIC we have to send 0x20 to address 0x20 if the irq number is between 0 and 7 and send it to both 0x20 and 0xA0 address if it's something between 8 and 15: if (irq < 8) { Out_Byte(0x20, 0x20); // something like this // as I should use a char // for the second arg... } else { Out_Byte(0x20, 0x20); Out_Byte(0xA0, 0x20); } But the actual code is a little bit more complex. Is that a bug or I have misunderstood something about the EOI and ...? Thanks, Behrang S. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Hi Behrang, Although Dave's answer is absolutely correct, I wanna explain it in more details. CPU may be interrupted in 2 ways: programmatically or by the hardware. Every such case has the associated number, called 'interrupt number'. CPU then searches special table, called IDT (interrupt descriptor's table), and uses the interrupt number as an index to find the handler: a function to call to handle the interrupt. (there are different IDT formats for real and protected mode, but the concept remains the same). Programmatically, you issue an interrupt by instruction INT XX, where XX is an interrupt number (index in IDT). All interrupts from real hardware go to a chip called 'programmable interrupt controller', or PIC. PIC then sends an interrupt to a processor: so PIC is an 'interrupt router'. PIC has 8 'pins', or lines, called 'interrupt request lines'. Say, system timer is connected to IRQ line 0. The issue with PIC is: interrupts coming from IRQ lines, i.e. from real devices, must be mapped to interrupt numbers. This mapping is done when PIC is initialized by the BIOS. Initialization means picking starting 'base' interrupt number for the PIC, so IRQ's will be mapped as follows: IRQ0 ===> INT CHOSEN_BASE IRQ1 ===> INT CHOSEN_BASE + 1 and so on. (i'm not describing PIC cascading) By default, BIOS maps IRQ0 to INT 8. PIC may be re-initialized at any time. The only problem with that is that IRQ <-> INT mapping may cause a conflict between hardware interrupts and installed 'programmatic' interrupts. This even comes with default BIOS mapping. So that is the reason why PIC is reprogrammed at very early stage of system startup: to remap IRQs to unused area in IDT to avoid the conflicts. programming PIC is a matter of sending specific commands to specific io-ports, assigned to PIC chip. defs.h contains all that defines. hope that helps. sergey __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Programmatically, you issue an interrupt by instruction INT XX, where XX is an interrupt number (index in IDT). All interrupts from real hardware go to a chip called 'programmable interrupt controller', or PIC. PIC then sends an interrupt to a processor: so PIC is an 'interrupt router'. PIC has 8 'pins', or lines, callePOST /ym/ComPOST /ym/Compose?YY=46200 HTTP/1.1 Host: us.f136.mail.yahoo.com User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US; rv:1.3.1) Gecko/20030516 Accept: text/xml,application/xml,application/xhtml xml,text/html;q=0.9,text/plain;q=0.8,video/x-mng,image/png,image/jpeg,image/gif;q=0.2,*/*;q=0.1 Accept-Language: en-us,en;q=0.5 Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate,compress;q=0.9 Accept-Charset: ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7 Keep-Alive: 300 Proxy-Connection: keep-alive Referer: http://us.f136.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?YY=41130 Cookie: B=8ei6a5sv4l42e __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? These constants are in defs.asm, and they are used for programming the 8259A PIC chips used to route external interrupts to the CPU. ICW means "initialization control word", IIRC. Their meaning is described in the 8259A datasheet. -Dave |

Got it to compile OK and I got it to run exactly using what you said. Thanks! However, the keyboard doesn't work I gotta go check that out... Hi, it seems that you need to check your Bochs configuration file. Check for a line linking the ROM and make sure it points to a valid file. For more help with Bochs, e-mail the Bochs Developers list. Thanks David! changing nasmw to nasm in the makefile helped me along. Right now geekos-0.1.0 compiles for me on Win982E w/ cygwin but doesn't "work". I think it's only fair that I send you back my few (pitiful) changes. (The changed/added files are in an attached .zip file) I added part of libsupc++ from FreeBSD to the directory structure for __cxa_pure_virtual (I'm assuming this is what balks when a pure virtual C++ method is called but I really don't now) and I commented out well, everything in it except the skeleton of the function. I added pure.cpp (I changed the name from pure.cc in libsupc++ to .cpp). I changed the makefile to add the source for pure.cpp and the libsupcpp directory (Again changed libsupc++ to libsupcpp.) I changed nasmw to nasm in common.mak. Now, I got geekos to compile and tried to run it in Bochs and here's what I got: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can also start bochs with the -q option to skip these menus. 1. Restore factory default configuration 2. Read options from... 3. Edit options 4. Save options to... 5. Begin simulation 6. Quit now Please choose one: [5] 00000000000i[ ] installing win32 module as the Bochs GUI 00000000000i[ ] using log file ./bochs.out # In bx_win32_gui_c::exit(void)! ======================================================================== Bochs is exiting with the following message: [MEM0 ] ROM: couldn't open ROM image file '/fs/unsupported/bochs/bochs/1.3/BIOS- bochs-latest'. ======================================================================== Bochs is exiting. Press ENTER when you're ready to close this window. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Again any advice regarding this would be greatly appreciated!
