Hey. I got a cue cat from Ebay, downloaded the UPC lookup pgm, as advised by PC Magazine, and I can now scan the jar of Planter's Peanuts sitting on my desk... but...
I'm not sure what the UPC lookup program does with the data it looks up... It saves it to a program that ends in .upc... but I can 't figure out how to imnport it into an excel spreadsheet, or what to do with it...
Is it always going to be a two step process: Scan with UPC Look up, and then import it into my excel spreadsheet, or is there a way I can scan with my cue cat and have it directly put into my spreadsheet...
Thx for any help you can give. The program has very little documentation that I can see...

The UPC file is in an internal format and has the results of all the adds and removes as well as the string of the lookup result. You look at it either of two ways:
1. Export to CSV (which will get a .INV extension), then use something like Excel, Access, or similar
2. Do a lookup in the software directly & look at the number in parenthesis at the end of the returned lookup string.
Hello, I've been trying to figure out how to use the program AnythingInventory. I unzip the file but there isn't an executable file or anything just what appears to be something that works with another program maybe? would anyone know what I need to do to be able to run the program AnythingInventroy? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jeremy

There's a separate download with Windows executable files in it. The link https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=128874 is the same as the downloads tab; then the first thing you should see is something called "Initial Release - Windows EXEs". That's what you'll want.

Thanks for your quick reply! I'm sorry but I must be really dense or something, and like the last guy going to feel really stupid after asking... but I'm not having much luck putting 1 and 1 together and coming out with two. :) I have the EXE files and I have release 4-20-2005 but the only things I'm getting to work is the recipe database for access out of the 4-20-2005 release and the UPC Internet Lookup out of the EXE files. Is that all there is for the kitchen PC or am I missing something. I was expecting something more like a program to keep a running inventory of my food on hand and be able to generate a shopping list based on what I've used etc. and possibly link it to recipes so I could generate a list of what I could make with what I have on hand. Needless to say I'm new to this kind of stuff. I usually just buy software that does this sort of thing but I've never have found anything like this other than the article I came across on the PC magazine website recently. Thanks again for your help and time.

It's possible you've just misunderstood what the software does and doesn't do. (By chance have you read the chapter on it in our book Geek House?) The software reads UPC scans, looks up the item on the net, and then lets you check items into and out of your inventory. The book chapter explains how that works.
The current inventory is saved in the .UPC file. You can export that to a CSV which you can import into a database; we discuss in the chapter how the software could be extended to do more if you wanted to take that on using the source code we provide here on SourceForge.

Yeah I ordered the book the same day I found the article. Just got it day before yesterday and I wish I would have done some more research on the project before getting so excited. I didn't realize that to be able to take full advantage of this that I'd have to know how to program. Which I don't know even the most basics so this is WAY out of my league unfortunately. Oh well maybe someday something like this will be available on the market and affordable at the same time. Thanks for all your help and quick replies. Have a great one! Jeremy

In our book Geek House, look in Chapter 6. On Amazon, it's at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=barrypress&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764579568?v=glance%26n=283155
