    TMan - 2011-11-22

I noticed in some earlier versions the menu cache attempted to create a file but kicked out some errors for me at least.  I saw you said it was fixed so I tried upgrading.  I have ticked the box in advanced settings to enable the cache, but see zero speed improvement and no sign of any file being created.  I have hundreds of apps, the cache would really help. I don't think its working, which is a bummer. Any ideas?

Also, you changed the default icon in the program that show in the taskbar and the menu top left.  I got the source and attempted to compile with a different icon but got some errors.  Could you PLEASE replace the icon in the next build with one that looks more like a usb stick, like it was before. I got really used to it and think its better.  I have a really nice one to use or you could take the original portablapps.com icon.  The new one just gets lost in the crowd in the tray. Thanks.  Awesome menu by the way I have used it for awhile and have it setup with over 400 apps, 3 levels deep, bootable with linux, live xp, backtrack and about 40 more recovery programs and disk imaging tools,  all very tidy and easy to maintain.  I just can't replace the darn icon :( Keep up the good work, glad to see your working on it again.

I have it all running off my Router based NAS with just a shortcut to autostart when a computer starts on my network. That way I don't have to install anything to my computers. They are all basically empty. Like my own cloud setup. I hope you keep working on this but don't get lost in far out features. It's pretty good now just make small tweaks, specifically loading speed for those like me with alot of apps.  Thanks.

Regarding your cache settings- first of all, make sure that it is checked, then "refresh" the icons one last time for good measure, then exit geek menu.  Now see if there is a file in your Data directory called geekMenu.cache.  If there is, then gm should be loading from this and you should see speed improvements over the PortableApps.com menu when you restart.  If the file is missing, let me know, or if you're able to time similar load times between pa.com and geek.menu let me know.

If you prefer the older icon, that can be added to your icon theme- simply add to the icon theme directory an icon named geek.menu.ico, and restart (you can use this to replace the icon with any icon you like, including the old icon).  I happen to like the new icon better, so I won't be replacing it in the distribution any time soon.

As I stated it is checked. I have opened and closed, refreshed, etc. I have not seen the geekmenu.cache file in any sub directory even off a freshly downloaded copy and I am on XP. It showed up several builds ago but would then error and crash the menu.  Have not seen it since.  That was the main reason I updated. Ideas?

Regarding the icon thing, doh, yes I did it that way on the earlier build but forgot what I did. It worked fine, your original icon is good up top and i got my usb stick icon in the tray like i had before.  I originally was looking for the add picture option like on the right side avatar.

Okay, took a quick look- definitely a bug: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=209346&atid=1009346.  Not sure when I'll have a chance to fix it, but I'll get to it as soon as I can.

That would be awesome, the cache never really worked properly for me and it would help alot. The only suggestion I would make would be to either by default or option sort the lists with folders at the top and items on the bottom. Right now it sorts them all randomly. I have to put a [ in front of the item names to get them to sort properly. No rush and keep up the good work. Thanks.

Give 1.4.1.0 a shot, it should correct the issue that was preventing the cache file from getting created.

As regards sorting folders (or any arbitrary app) to the top, read the documentation- here's the relevant bit from the Guide to the hidden underbelly:
-You can force a shortcut or category to the top of the menu by renaming the category or application with a space in front of it.  The space will not display, but the app will sort to the top.

Cache works great! With 431 apps, load time went from over 500sec to 158sec, huge improvement. I realize I can sort by adding something to each individual item or folder name, like the space or special character in front, \ character at end of categoryPath, etc., however, I guess I was hoping for a default sort that is alphabetical but puts folders to the top like most explorers do so there is less to micro-manage. I can live with it though. Thanks for a quick fix. This was the main issue I was having :)

Another thing I noticed, After I do a rename on an item, it does a refresh, which for me takes awhile and defeats the cache a little bit. Makes it hard to add things such as a space before the name without going directly the the pafdata file. Is it possible to not have it refresh after name change?

    Glad it worked.

Refresh after rename is necessary because the sorting is impacted by the rename.  It's _possible_ to change that, but this introduces lots of other problems to be solved.
One of the features on my eventual list is to optimize the way geek.menu is using memory- this may result in a speedup of the refresh process, but it isn't a specific target, so I've added it as a separate feature request: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3441769&group_id=209346&atid=1009349
