Currently (0.2rc2) PDF meta data is set via \pdfinfo which does not allow for umlauts and special characters. Instead \hypersetup is recommended:

\ifpdf
\hypersetup{
pdftitle={Tipps für ...},
pdfsubject={Tipps für ...},
pdfauthor={schöne ähnliche und übliche Umlaute},
pdfkeywords={},
}
\fi

    In addition, \pdfinfo doesn’t work in XeTeX, where the \special{pdf: docinfo << >>} syntax is available. But it has the same issues with Unicode translation. hyperref handles XeTeX transparently, so this is a +1 to moving to hyperref.
