Not entirely true; The cells in your retina do need some time to 'discharge' (can't remember the proper term from my biology classes...) after they have received some light (and require some time to 'charge' before a new signal is sent to the brain). This is related to the fact that your eyes need time to adjust when you go from darkness into the light (though this is primarily caused by your pupils being wide open in the dark, so when you step into the light you experience a sort of overflow effect). I am pretty convinced that the eyes send discrete images to the brain, though maybe not as discrete as the frames in a computer game. However, the brain fills in the gaps. In fact, your brain does this all the time, with all sensory input. Most of the time, when you see a certain object, you only see it because the brain _expects_ to see that object.
