I'm guessing many of the search misses were about vibrating musical strings under tension, but you might be able to work with that well established basis of 1D of coupling relationships between nominally unit masses and get something out of papers on finite difference schemes. Some of the musical stuff could inform you about tricks for viscous damping, boundary behaviour and other loss in the model.
