Jeff (Roberts) should post here about how many problems they've had supporting hardware mixing with Miles because of the myriad ridiculously bad sound hardware and/or drivers that exist out there. I'm not even sure the default for most games is hardware - I think a lot of games use software mixing by default. I'd also like to point out that software rendering is also a big deal. http://hlsdk.valve-erc.com/, etc., once again, because of too disparate a set of cards, and because people don't often have the right drivers.
