No. D3D can be ported over to OpenGL (e.g. Michael Vance did it for
Heavy Gear II) but Direct Play is completly not portable. So if you
choose to use Direct Play you rule out network compatibility with e.g.
Linux. Even when you don't even consider your app/ game running on
another platform than Windows XYZ keep in mind that it also rules out
dedicated servers on other platforms.
