#2 Exceptions from Google Maps are not caught

Exceptions thrown when static maps are downloaded are not caught and cause the download process to fail.
Exceptions have to be handled as follows: if exceptions occur, they shall be caught and an empty list of images shall be returned. As soon as the server allows the download of images again, everything will work as expected.
