I believe that the checksum file can be discarded ... But what about the "use_in_master" directory, and the included file ? Both don't exist in the initial installation !

The checksum is used by GCstudio. and therefore is required. The use.ini is the baseline use.ini and contains any new entries - see the change log for these new entries.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/gcbasic/files/Release%20Candidates/Patches/ is a good reason to use GCstudio :)
apply all files to your installation replacing all the existing files is copy from unzipped and paste to gcbasic.exe or gcbasic64.exe?
Why create a new folder not unzip to same file location ie downloads? You going to erase it after.
I found RC updates a do I replace gcb or just copy the release over?
I usually just wait for the next official release.
GCstudio is now using fixes for users to test rather than make a new release.

Would this procedure be OK :
1) Unzip the patch to a "working directory" ; it creates a gcb@Syn directory.
2) Inside the Great Cow Basic subdir, replace (via copying and renaming) the gcbasic.exe with the gcbasic64.exe (I use W7 x64 pro).
3) Copy gcb@Syn directory to the same place as former version, replacing all files.
4) Replace the former use.ini in the appropriate subdie with the new one.
5) Delete use_in_master and checksum file
? ? ?
PS : what is GCStudio ???

Step 1 to 3 only.
4. You should compare new and old. Do any of the new changes add any value to your setup? So, no, retain in its folder.
5. No. The checksum when compared to an existing checksum can tell you every file that change. So, retain.
6. What about the folders? they could have updates?
Or, use GCStudio to update your system.

GCStudio is what Evan Venn thinks is the future of GCB. Don't know what other GCB developers think.
It's different and option overload for just using GCB but it doesn't crash like gcb synwrite does and it looks pretty :) The auto update I appreciate, no confusion, it does it at open.
I started testing it then started using it instead of GCB. It's early days.
User feedback will reveal problems and ideas.

Dunno, never used a patch just the other fixes and rc stuff... hence recommending gcstudio.
I hope it's ok to recommend gcstudio.

GC Studio is a new complete system of Great Cow Basic, actually it born from an idea i have on one of your threads.
GC Studio is a new installation and don't mess up your current gcb@syn folder.
GC Studio allows you to use as IDE the trusty SynWrite, or the new one GC Code (based on microsoft Visual Studio Code)
the system will update all your components (compiler, IDE, programmers, demos, etc.) in an automated, simple and unattended way every time a new update its available, so you always have an up to date GCB.
it serves also as a very useful (and a very customizable) general editor among other things.
it have GIT and GITHUB source control integration out of the box.
whit this you don't need to patch your compiler or search if there is a new patch, it will do automatically for you.
Since I didn't succeed in running GC Studio (reported ... twice ! ), I wanted use the conventional way to update GCBasic and downloaded the patch of april. BTW GCBasic64.exe triggers Panda AV, but this can be avoided further by "validating" the exe file one time as harmless. More serious : the help file GCBasic.chm does not work (so did the january version too), nothing appears in the right window which remains desperately empty. Should I use the old version instead (from the former installation), or are there severe modifications ? Fortunately I made a backup of all originals ...

I have GC Studio successfully running on Windows 7 x86 and x64
Can you help me with the following info:
1.- Did your Win7 installation have Service Pack1? (visible at system properties)
2.- Did "CurrentVersion.nfo" exist at your current GCstudio install directory?
3.- Can you open this file on textpad and post the contents here?
4.- is the installed directory the default "C:\GCstudio\"? if answer is NO, please share the path.

I tried installing gcs on a SLOW win 7 ultimate laptop and got blue screen and disk check.
It has sp1.
Now this screen... but I don't care as the machine is too slow to use. I replaced the hdd on my pcs and other laptop with ssd which is lots faster.
I think it's the machine's fault cgs fails cos it's fine on 3 other machines.

Which type of patch installer?
Downloaded from here :
https://sourceforge.net/projects/gcbasic/files/Release%20Candidates/Patches/
as a zip file

Hi Bertrand. I already see the issue you submitted on the bug tracker.
Windows 7 service pack 1 is supported with this two mandatory security updates:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4474419
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB2999226
select and download the corresponding 64bit versions.

1) Yes, SP1 is installed ; BTW I made all updates till the end of W7 support.
2) Attached CurrentVersion.nfo
3) The directory is OK
4) To Anobium : Murphy says that my Windows version is W7 x64 Pro ; it is not in Your list !
OK. I have to ask. What list ? :-)
To Angel : the first update is already installed ; I didn't find the second one, only for Vista and server 2008. To Anobium : W7 x 64 is not in the list of systems You use for tests ...
Ah true... I no longer have a Windows 7 installation. There have been no security updates since Jan 2020 and if I infected the Great Cow BASIC tool chain ... you may be a little more concerned.
The file you uploaded is correct.
Second Update
For the second update, please select Vista 64bit (in reality this update is for win vista,7,8 and 8.1)
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB2999226
Try again with this installed.
If it still doesn't work.
please install this one (this runtime is not required but the project used it at start, i want to make sure this is not the problem)
https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet-framework/thank-you/net472-web-installer
Don't forget to report back.
Angel.
Here is the second update for W7 x64:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49093
PS : I tried a double click on the nfo file and got this (attached) ; translation : the information system prog cannot open this file ; it has perhaps been damaged or is incompatible with this version of system information.
