This is because I build GCBASIC for a 586/Pentium - this reduces the size of the .exe, and makes it run a little faster. However as you've discovered, this means it won't work on a 486!
I'll try to keep the 486 version available - it's just a matter of using a different command line parameter when compiling GCBASIC.
Out of curiosity, what version of Windows are you using on the 486? On my Windows 98 PC, I've had trouble with Crimson Editor locking up after GCBASIC finishes compiling. I'm not sure what causes this, but you may wish to try one of the IDEs for GCBASIC that is available - they're both linked to on the home page.

I'm not aware of any issues with ME, but haven't tried GCBASIC on it. However, it should be fine and I am happy to fix any bugs should they appear.
GCBASIC itself is fine on these older versions of Windows. It's just the issue with Crimson Editor, which I don't think is under development any more unfortunately.

Have just installed GCBasic with Crimson editor and ICProg.
Have opened example basic program and pressed F9
Compiled gives error message 486 required to run this program.
Computer has 486-DX4 100MHz CPU
Why this error ? Can it be fixed ?
Thanks
Dave

I've created a version of GCBASIC for a 486 - you can download it at http://gcbasic.sourceforge.net/newfiles/gcbasic486.zip . You'll need the newest update.zip installed - this is available at http://gcbasic.sourceforge.net/newfiles/update.zip
