Does the book use Great Cow Basic code?
I don't see that written anywhere in the description.
If it's not, your gonna end up writing the code over again and that introduces problems for a beginner.

The AVR and PIC are different products so they require different programmers.

    I prefer PICs.
I suggest you start simple and then move on from there.
Getting a complete package is the best way to start.

Not to promote my own stuff but that is why I put together my GreatCowBasic.com website with a starter kit that is designed for the Beginner using PICs.

    http://www.greatcowbasic.com

I use the PIC16F886 in a CHIPINO module (that is pin compatible with most Arduino shields) and a PICkit 2 Clone programmer which is much better than the K150 programmer which is really old. I also have a complete install package so you just run it and all the programmer and compiler are setup ready to run.

Then I added a sample programs page to show how to do the basics, flash an LED, read ADC, drive an LCD. And I used shields for those that are hardware challenged.

All the code samples are GCB.

    Check it out.
I've helped 1000's get started programming through my PICBASIC and C books and the biggest hurdle I found was people buying all sorts of stuff and then spend more time trying to get it to work together rather than learning to program. I've seen the best success when they use a packaged kit like the PICKit Starter Kit I used for my Embedded C books.
Since there wasn't a complete GCB package, I created one.
