I tried to open gcb tools prog preference to change com port and got the photos.
It hasn't happened until intalling new pickitplus software today.
It's a loop when I try to change programmer preferences. I need to change the com port number.
What to do as win 10 won't install it.
Any other things the gcb ide is not going to do?
Joys of buying a used pc.
Gcb on an older win 10 pc has been no problems like this.
Most gcb stuff I did was on win 7 laptops but I'm moving on to win 10 64bit pcs.
net 3.5 is win xp software.
This didn't work https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/dotnet-35-windows-10
So I can't use gcb on this pc? ...and I thought linux was bad :)

So I can not use this pc with gcb. Great.
My other win 10 pc I did pong on doesn't work either, it was nano but unos don't work either.
Back to win 7 laptops. If older software works then there's a problem and the only new thing is the pk+ addon. Probably not the problem just coinsidence.
There's been changes in the reports that you get when flashing pics, dunno about avr.
Lots of updates it seems.

This is kinda crazy. In fact, you don't have to install GCB. Just copy the full folder structure from a working computer. (Note: it has to be the exact folder structure right up to the root (eg. "H:\Microchip\Great Cow Basic" in my case, or you will have to go in and change the path on many, many files because synwrite doesn't use relative paths like it should.) In fact, I don't have it "installed" and use it without problems. I wish we could just get a zip instead of an install program myself. I don't see the need for more things "installed" when portable is sooo much better.
As for the .net framework, this really shouldn't be a problem to install. When you say it didn't work, what was the problem/error message?

The design intent is for portability. I believed that the toolchain is portable across file structure. I have had the developers of software in the toolchain ensure relative file structures - but, it is likely that something has crept in.
So. if there are cases where synwrite, and any part of the toolchain. is not using relative file locations then that is wrong and we need to correct before the next release.
Pleaase open a new thread so Frank and I can resolve before the next release.

I'm going to retrack my statement. After reinstalling and running a test hex/flash, there only two obvious offenders. First is synwrite which write to all it history files, which is not a problem.
Number two is PickitPlus which writes to
C:\Users\%userprofile%\AppData\Local\GreatCowBASIC folder
insted of writing to it's own folder.

I tried rebooting off the old win 10 on hdd and still can't use avr uno/nano...error (1)
tried install and use XLOADER and that failed.
tried rename gcbsyn to save and tried gcb .95 and that failed
as did new gcb .96 install.
renamed and back to original with pickit plus and new software which seems ok wit pickit 2 programmer.
no proplems with win 7 laptop but haven't installed the new pickit+ software yet.
as for .network 3.5 on my other win 10 pc I have spent hours trying to install it with no success
even cmd.
two win 10 pc that don't run gcb.....not a problem??

No it's a repackaged dell inspiron.
The win 10 is probably not proper though. How do you know with ebay, amazon? ie used pc. New ones don't come with a win 10 dvd rom either. Argos,pc world, currys, tesco.
For interest on this pc which is the dell inspiron I'm using and it needs .net3.5,
I just downloaded a win 10 iso from ms using the tool and saving as iso.
Burnt to dvd and inserted. It auto ran and installed win 10....on win 10.
No keys needed and option to save apps etc at start so looks the same when it rebooted....
and still no .net3.5.
From searching it's common and nothing I've tried works. even reinstalling win 10.
With the recomendation to upgrade win 7 to win 10 what will people get.
Anobiums suggestion that probably worked ok for him. Did it Anobium.?
My other win 10 pc is a free upgrade ms did a few years ago.
Only recently have I had probs with flashing avr. Pickit it ok.
Even XLOADER doesn't work...which is a simple flash hex to avr app.
Win 7 laptops and an old win 7 celeron pc are working gcb ok.
so, everything except flashing an avr is working. This narrows it down considerably. Since I don't have an avr, I'm not going to be any help here, but it seems like a quite solvable problem. Hang in there.

You still haven't given the error code on the installation of .net 3.5 yet. Those error codes can be looked up and there is usually a workaround to fix the problems.

Currents asks.
1. Show the error message, from the UI or the event log, when .NET 3.5 fails to install.
2. Show the device manager screen for the comms ports
New asks.
1. Show the system screen to show us the Operating System and the type of OS. S-Mode, Ultimate, Professional, Home etc.
So, three things to provide. Then, wait. As having you go hunting on whether any of the information above sparks your interest... will negate the information you provide.
Or, your choice.. you could keep trying stuff.

I should have added that this is a new install on a new used pc. First run.
Reinstall gcb?
edit- no,same problem.
the answer is reinstall win 10...or is it?
Last edit: stan cartwright 2020-01-16
I am not a Win10 user but the obvious answer is to do what the First message says.
Install .NET Framework
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/dotnet-35-windows-10
Windows 10 does not install .NET Framework ... dunno why.
Fortnite needs it. So, the kids are all getting used to installing!

Phew re SynWrite. Good to know.
Oh. re PICKitPlus. Not for this forum - but, I will resolve. I will move to an appropiate folder. :-)

Win10 and GCB are good. All my main eight machines are Win10.
Just show me the device page again. And, dont change stuff after you post the screen shot of the device page.
Jim G -are you using win 10? are you flashing avr?
It did work on this pc but installed 4G ram and graphic card and ssd boot drive.
Stan I am using win 10. Yes, I am flashing Win10
SHOW ME YOUR DEVICE DRIVER PAGE.
If this yours... then, this is is the issue
Where is the issue please? usb or Other devices
Is this the Win10 instal that you recommended with the Dodgy Key generated by a hacker program?
If so ..........................

I got gcb installed on a rpi but it complained it needed .net 3 so gave up.
so, everything except flashing an avr is working. This narrows it down considerably. Since I don't have an avr, I'm not going to be any help here, but it seems like a quite solvable problem. Hang in there.
