I was having some problems with intermentant programing problems unitl I noticed the PIC chips barely made connection to the socket pins.on the board. My solution was to use wire wrap sockets inserted into the bread board. See picture attached.
The contacts on solderless breadboards get damaged (reduced grip pressure) if you insert jumpers or components with wire gauge larger than a 1/4 watt resistor. Rectifier diodes like the 1N400x series are too large and should never be inserted directly. Nor should tinned solid or stranded wire be used.
