I am not clear on this. I did once contribute for pickitplus but never used it.
Why not adverts like mmbasic forum?
That is open source but forum admin selling pcbs. MMBASIC picomite for lcd or vga version is looking like a contender for gcb from price and capabilities for Basic and a hobbyist view point.
    https://www.thebackshed.com/forum/ViewForum.php?FID=16 with adverts.
I seem to use gcb less after using mmbasic. A dual core nano sized board and all that goes with that, 265MHz clock, ram, memory, price.

I am not sure about advertising on Sourceforge.

PICKit Plus is programming software for PICs. And, unrelated with respect to operational costs.

So, hence the ask for support with the running costs for GCB.

MMBasic is targeting a specific architecture. Where GCB targets any of the 1300+ chips. A better comparison would be Picaxe and MMBasic.

Every one else advertises. Gcstudio is a major step. Why not a different forum host? I know nothing about these things.
I just happened upon mmbasic.. as I did with gcbasic.
I only use 328 uno/nano and lgt328 with gcb so pic stuff is irrelevant.
The forum is 2 way ie reporting faults.
I would not compare picaxe and mmbasic, mmbasic was meant for 32bit pics and there is a community using them then there was mmbasic for rpi2040 pico due to chip shortage and picomite came about. It relies on the processor speed and memory as it is interpreted basic
    but it is very fast.
ili9341 graphics, touch and sd card are well supported and very fast for spi.

    cheap enough for robotics.
The mmbasic seems supported by adverts, well the forum site it shares is.

This debate seems to be highly off topic but I felt I should add some clarity.

I moved to GCBASIC from MMBASIC several years ago.
At the time I was primarily using PIC32 and commercially involved, as a consultant, in a PIC32 based Project for a large NGO, Said project was being ported from an Arduino Prototype.

When the project finished I had a range of PIC23 Devices that had been supplied for RND and so I built the Micro Mite Computer from SC Magazine and played with it.

I went on to design and publish several new Micro Mite designs, including a breadboard version similar to the breadboard PK2 and wrote several articles about PIC32 Architecture for the MMBASIC and general PIC Communities..

But it was plainly obvious that whilst a fun throwback to BBC/Sinclair BASIC reminiscent of the start of home computing, MMBASIC was no good for practical control applications and the PIC32 far too expensive for simple home applications.

Some speed could be clawed back by writing and compiling embedded C++ and linking it and calling it from MMBASIC but then you may as well just build the app in C++.

Long story Short GCBASIC is great for small to medium application development for control situations.
A PIC12 with GCBASIC costs a couple of Cents and way out performs a PIC32 running MMBASIC for a few $.

If you like to tinker, as I know you do, it is a great product. But If you want practical solutions to everyday control issues it is nowhere near GCBASIC and was never designed or intended to be.

      Cheers
      Chris

The merits of different compilers and chips are always down to the users needs. Each has its space.

Re adverts. For GCB we just need a few 100$ a year. Advertising would mean accounting for the revenue and reporting the revenue - not something I want to do. It is a key principle of Hugh's that GCB be free. It is a principle I fully support. Let us keep it simple re the recovery of the costs.

Many free applications say contributions welcome. That is ok if you think the software was useful.
I will contribute for using gcb but how much is expected from a user? This is not clear.
@caroper, I am new to mmbasic. I found it this year on picomite not years ago on pics.
A hobbyist basic and kit but compare a uno/nano and picomite for price and coding and
    picomite wins in some ways.
Variables are float, 4 byte integer or string. It is strange using floats that seem as fast as integers.
Using an integer for 1 bit seems wasteful but seems normal.
I am saying from a hobbyist view that mmbasic could attract none pic gcb users like me that only use avr.
I have coded a few gcb glcd lcd and mmbasic "sprites".
Using gcb was much faster than mmbasic but using the blit copy function and mmbasic was faster.

Evan has implemented ssd1306 and xor graphics and ili9341 touch and find pixel colour and laser rangefinder and 3 axis device but only when asked. same with scale function, someone asked for arduino map.

OK, back to donations. I can understand the effort answering questions and developing code.
How much is expected ... or gcb stops working???

      Thank you!

I cannot say what the amount should be. But, look at the current graph, see how many folks have contributed and then that is the average.

GCB stops working? This is more about... why should I be out of pocket in my efforts to provide the software. We will get there this week. :-)
