use smaller screen with touch that gcb supports eg...ili9341
or in reality a device like in the image.
That is the trouble, many things are not worth making...except for learning and experience.
Try hacking a ready made one is more of a challenge!

Nothing done in GCB but why not throw over the fence into other gardens?
Maybe this will inspire one or the other to implement a similar project with "our" means?
And if not, Li grey's project can still serve as a prime example of successful documentation.

Why not just use an orp12 ldr and readad to measure ambient light level?
The screen looks expensive.
Yes, why not, one Resistor and the LDR should be enough to be connected to an analog pin.
