The forum for Great Cow Basic has two things that are currently causing me to scratch my head [and swear profusely]:

1: Every time I post a comment or create a new topic, I am automatically subscribed to that topic and get an avalanche of emails each time it is commented upon or added to. I know I can turn this off, but this behavior has only recently started, it didn't use to happen, and if I could turn it off by default, I would. Does anyone know how I can turn this 'feature' off please?

2: Is there some magic way of jumping in a thread to the most recent post? As threads get longer and longer, it becomes more and more hard work to find the most recent comments, especially so when they might be responses to another comment, often only part way down the thread. This would be less tiresome if navigating the forum wasn't as slow as a sloth in a tar pool. It's slower than a 110bps (bits per second) dial-up modem on a party line. Dial-Up? You were lucky... We used to have to start the modem half an hour before we were evenborn!

Sorry for going off on one, but it doesn't half cause bad language here in the 'Stevo' household. Eeh, if you could hear me now... Turn yer hair it would.

That still beats the "Two Can String" network that I started with ..................
or was that "Token Ring" it has been a long time.

IBM Token Ring @ 4mb/sec or Broken Ring as I used to call it. Dreadful idea... 7 networks maximum. Those were not the days!

Oh dear, oh dear. Dear person that has nearly gone off on one......(please take in the spirit it is intended)

    1. Select 'Me'at top of page, then, 'Profile' then, 'Edit Personal Data' [top pane, White text here], then, 'Subscriptions" tab. Edit away.

I use Outlook Professional Email. Fancy - pancy
    2. I just select the URL and it takes me to the latest post. No fustration..... LOL
So, you email client may be removing URLs?

Perhaps my befuddlement has clouded my explanation(s).

I visit the forum directly, navigating to the SourceForge site for GCB discussions. Then looking at the topics, I select a topic and that selects the first post. I'd prefer to be taken to th most recent (unread) post. But I can't seem to find a way of doing that. I haven't tried from email messages as I usually have the emails turned off.

When I make a post, I am automatically subscribed to the topic. It is this automatic subscription that I would like to change. I can unsubscribe later, but I would prefer not to be subscribed automatically if possible.

OK. The first is sorted by using an RSS reader. If you use an RSS reader you will get updates and then get taken directly to the post.

OK. Then, second it mutually exclusive to the RSS feed.

So, look into using the RSS feed. I use this in Outlook - if you dont have Outlook or an RSS reader on your mobile phone, then, there are lots of RSS reader/applications out there.

    RSS feed is https://sourceforge.net/p/gcbasic/activity/feed

Once you have have the RSS feed working - disable all other alerting/subscriptions.

I'll look into the 'RSS' thingy. Now that MacOS has discontinued native support for RSS, it could take a while!

Most browsers support it, as does a phone.

Safari used to support it, but it was discontinued around September 2017. Not very handy!

There is a simple app called 'RSS Bot' which allows subscriptions to RSS services and simply sits in the menu bar area where it lights up (and pings if wanted) to advise of 'new' content. Clicking on this then opens Safari at the new content.

That part of my question has been answered and RSS Bot is working, thanks.

My second query still eludes an answer. I'll attach a small screenshot.

Each time I post, edit an existing post or reply to another post the little box below is automatically filled which then subscribes me to that topic. I can't seem to turn this automatic behaviour off and so I have to remember to 'uncheck' the box, before clicking the 'Post' button. If I don't I then get emails notifying me which I then have to turn off in my profile or I have to find the thread and unsubscribe from there. It just annoys me that there isn't an option to make the default behaviour to not tick that box for me, and not subscribe me automatically.

I did have emails turned off fully (which got round the problem neatly) but of course I then got no private messages either.

In gmail the end of the message has
To unsubscribe from further messages, please visit https://sourceforge.net/auth/subscriptions/
So I tried that and checked a box saying check for no more sourceforge mail.
    This is a test.

It worked. My last post hasn't appeared and before I posted it the message to subcribe was there.

  • mkstevo

    mkstevo - 2019-03-06

But doesn't that unsubscribe you from all other emails too? I'll try...

So I saved that option from the email as suggested by Stan, and it certainly seems to have unsubscribed me from this thread so far. No little box at all is showing, ticked or otherwise. Super. Oh, no, the first press of the Post button didn't work, now the page has refreshed, the 'Subscribe' box is back, and it's filled again just as before. Hmmm...

I wasn't subscribed to anything from souceforge other than gcb forum.
There's no buttons in this post.
edit posted ok and doesn't appear in gmail.

It may be something to do with my profile if it doesn't happen for other people. I just wish I could find out what that setting is.

I took another screenshot before I started typing and as can be seen, the subscribe box is filled for me again. This action happens on my 'phone and on my tablet too. 'Phone and tablet are both running Android, versions 6 and 9 using the Opera Web Browser. My computer is an iMac running Safari.

    Most peculiar.

That is interesting. None of my browers have that "subscribe to this topic". How odd.

Just tested with Opera thru to IE10 and Chrome.

I then went into my subscriptions, unsubscribed from this tool (the discussion tool) and the "subscribe to this topic" appears.

    Hope this helps.

      After going to https://sourceforge.net/auth/subscriptions/
the subscribe box appeared and was checked in the test post.
all posts since, including this, no subscribe box.
I only use google chrome and gmail though.

The screen shot shows what I see following that link.

I'm not, as far as I know, subscribed to anything, but still that 'Subscribe to this topic' button is selected.

Tried logging in, logging out, logging in as new user, logging back in as myself... Still that box stays filled. If I forget to untick it, I get emails for all the next posts. Perhaps I need to lie down in a darkened room for a while.

I've had a look at that. As I don't 'Host' any discussions on SourceForge, I can't seem to unsubscribe from it? Or any others as you suggest.

This is bananas! I have signed up as a new member, with a new user name, and I'm still getting the same 'Subscribe to this topic automatically selected.

I clicked the https://sourceforge.net/auth/subscriptions/ then went to preferences and at the bottom of the list is User Messages ... and the unsubscribe button
