I'd like to ask if I can extract the folder "GreatCowBasic" from the installation executeable and then drop this into the "GCB@Syn" folder over the top of (perhaps deleting or renaming first) the existing "GreatCowBasic" folder when upgrading from one version of GCB to the newest?

The reason I ask this, is that I mostly run GCB from within WINE on my iMac and have customised some of the scripts to speed up compilation in the virtual environment, included a custom path and program for Help and so on, to make the functionality of GCB and the IDE closer in comparison to the native Windows experience. As doing this took some time, I'm probably running on a release that is one, two, or more, releases out of date.

I'd like to keep up to date, after all I don't want the work everyone has put into 0.98 to be wasted, but equally, I don't want to mess up the WINE install I have put that effort into fettling, in order that it now works more how I'd like.

There are a number of installation options. You need to get the one without all the extra bits - I think it is called Core.

But, there are a number of components like PPSTool that are not in Core release.

I recommend a simpler approach. Download and install the complete package to a temp folder and create a script that moves what you need to your target folder strucutre. It would be better in the long term as will will start to update more often soon. And, I really do not want to have another distribution to manage - We have five to manage at the moment.
