Just like to tell Anobium that after having a look at the DAT (or .inc) file I can see no reason to Include it!
Further we seem to be blessed here with only 4 connections to the PicKit3 ground, ,5V. clock and data.
Then write a program ,,one click HEX next click Flash and we are there using ASM to check for syntax. in and amongst other error.I do not even have to put a pull up resistor on MCLR.
Please correspond with thumbs up if This is agreeable
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
I prefer the 2 over the 3 because the 2 doesn't insist on downloading new firmware each time you change PIC families (which for me involves multiple unplugging and re-plugging of the USB connection to get the various firmware phases to complete successfully). Of course, the device in question must be supported by the data file (or added if compatible ). I use the PICKit2's standalone GUI mostly or MPLAB IDE 8.92 occasionally.

Look at this... you dont need to plug and unplug... reflash etc... http://gcbasic.sourceforge.net/Typesetter/index.php/pickitPlus
You choose. Either could work. But, I would think the PICKit2 is a better purchase as you get more functionality for the investment.
the red pk2 looks just like pk3... 'cept 2 is 3
