I ended using a turned ic holder and breadboard or vero.
it's only 3 pins for a pic and that's isp.
I never got any instructions with the zif I bought and the board is confusing.

I also use a IC holder. A 8-pin can be used for 8,14,and 20 pin chips as all the programming pins are in the same place (on the top 8 pins). If you get a cheap IC holder you can remove the pins that are not needed so avoiding (you hope) pin damage.
