    My assumption was that you would be developing on the actual application board, not a 'development board", and that the board would most likely have a serial port or USB port. That's  what I've always done, but it doesn't mean that's what everyone does. In that case, the bootloader also allows field upgrades.

    If I used tiny boot loader then I guess I'd use usb ttl converter and it's like a uno.I can't see the point as icsp works fine with gcb. What would the advantage be if I used a bootloader please?

    That's why I use icsp and pickit 2. A bootloader would need usb to ttl converter if using a laptop less than 10 years old as they don't fit rs232 sockets anymore. My hp does and a centronics port, who uses those anymore?
    How do I open "alternate"?
