The only time you could need it is if you had an ICD2 or similar programmer, for which there was no standalone software. (If you're using a PICkit 2, you can get a standalone program. Look for PK2CMD.)

Most other compilers require MPLAB installed just for the MPASM.
I like the fact I don't need MPLAB.

No, GCGB doesn't normally use MPLAB at all.
