An error in the use of eta_l to be fixed in the next release

Prior to January 12, 2007, the calibration algorithms in GBTIDL at all NRAO sites had an error where, instead of using 0.99 for the rear spillover efficiency (eta_l), it was using 1/0.99. Those observers who used the default units of Ta are not affected by this error. Only those that explicitly specified a unit of Ta* or Jy to the calibration routines would be affected. The magnitude of the error is 2%, smaller than the advertised accuracy of the calibration routines. ... read more

SDFITS Filler no longer no longer applies a Hanning window

As of Feb. 15, the SDFITS filler no longer applies a Hanning window to your data. The smoothing effects of windowing should no longer be apparent in data filled after that date. Although this is not a change in GBTIDL, because SDFITS is the primary path for data to get in to GBTIDL, GBTIDL users should understand the implications of this change. For a more detailed discussion of this change visit: http://wiki.gb.nrao.edu/bin/view/Data/SdfitsHanningRemoved

Version 1.2.1 is now available.

We would like to announce a patch to GBTIDL version 1.2, which is GBTIDL version 1.2.1. See the release notes for version 1.2 for a complete list of the new features and bug fixes in version 1.2.

The starting point for GBTIDL documentation, bug reporting and tracking, and discussion is here:
http://gbtidl.sourceforge.net/

GBTIDL is an interactive package for reduction and analysis of spectral line data taken with the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. The package consists of a set of straightforward yet flexible calibration, averaging, and analysis procedures (the "GUIDE layer") modeled after the UniPOPS and CLASS data reduction philosophies, a customized plotter with many built-in visualization features, and Data I/O and toolbox functionality that can be used for more advanced tasks. The entire package is written in IDL.... read more

Problem in the calculation of Tsys in GBTIDL

We have discovered an error in the calculation in Tsys for some GBTIDL calibration procedures in versions 1.2.0 and earlier. The result of the error is that the Tsys applied by these procedures was too small, by an offset of Tcal/2. The improper Tsys causes line strengths and noise levels to be too small by about Tcal/(2*Tsys).

Dear Friends of IDL,

Over the last few months (Dec 2004-March 2005), a number of newsworthy items have occurred within the GBTIDL project. I'll review here the revised project schedule, the various tests and reviews the software has had, the top project accomplishments, and the few remaining big items that still need to be addressed before the release date.
