I think it is realy very difficult to keep on the
overview or orientation at the gantt-chart when the
project is not a very small one.
I read about the possilbe development of an horizontal
scroll bar which I think it will be necessary for a
good usability.
But, however...
The integration of an jump-button, with which it will
be able to jump in the gantt-chart to the active task
(which is marked at the tree-frame) would be a great
beginning to increase the orientation possibility.

    IMHO jump is good but a horizontal scroll bar is still
    necessary, kind like a baseline feature.

    Jump could be performed by CTRL-LeftClicking on a task (on
    the left pane).

    In 2.0-pre1 a new feature appear.
    The chart can be center on the selected tasks.
    Does this feature solve you wish ?
