Every game has a format, a way of defining the winner(s). To provide the best information to the user, the system needs to know which format is the game using.
For example: card-game Dominion uses a no-team, victory points format; this means that the player who gets the most points wins. In contrast, the card-game Bang! uses a team, last-man-standing format, it also includes a character that defines each player.
