1) Make sure the solid tiles are on the same layer as the player
2) Go to the tile categories window and make sure you have created a solidity definition that includes a category of tiles with all the solid tiles in it.
3) Make sure you specify that solidity definition name in the Solid Tiles setting of the sprite definiton on the "Movement" tab.

You have to make sure that the path that you currently have selected on the sprites dialog is on a layer whose tileset has a solidity definition defined for it, otherwise it won't show anything. Note that a solidity definition is different than a tile category. Look at the quick tutorial for more info.
If the blank one is your solidity definition, then go back to the categories dialog and give it a name.

I know this is a really, really stupid question, but I can't seem to make the player sprite stop when it bumps into a solid. please help

With the third question, the only options are None, and a blank one.
