I can't understand why there are two separate ways of
showing a status icon in the first place, but the one
that's new as of 0.8.8 - the Notification Area one - is
displayed floating with a full set of (incredibly
cramped) window decorations if, on login, Gabber starts
up prior to the panel finishing setting up. I've now
disabled it under ~/.gnome/Gabber ([StatusIcon]), but
it was quite annoying while it was happening, and
there's no option on the GUI to disable it.
Is there any way you could periodically check for the
presence of an active panel notification area prior to
showing the icon?

There is supposedly a way to check for the existance of the
notification area, I just don't know what it is.
