I was a little surprised that when my first queued item finished and the next one didn't start... Is there a way to get that behavior? Or is it better to simply start everything and let them trickle in over time?

You woudlnt want to start *all* of them or you will get "too many open files" error.
So best thing is to monitor it every now and than.
