You need just lower the priority of your maintenance thread. If you are using pthreads: http://osr600doc.sco.com/en/man/html.PTHREAD/Intro.PTHREAD.html In the old days we called it it "nice" and the command is still around There are system calls: http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man2/setpriority.2.html But be careful, you should only set just your maintenance thread to a low priority.
