Is anything else talking to the device and confusing it?  ModemManager is one possible culprit, I have that disabled via a udev rule:

SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0403", ENV{ID_MM_DEVICE_IGNORE}="1"

Those kernels are quite old.  There have been many changes to the ftdi_sio driver since.  I would sanity check with newer kernels, the easiest way to do that might be to download a bootable CD image.
