I think your kernel may be to old for the following to work: echo 0403 6001 > /sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/ftdi_sio/new_id, if so, get the ftdi_serial driver code, add the VendorID:Product id pair to the header file, recompile and modprobe as usual.
