Here's a thought:

Get songprint to recognise the soundtrack for a TV advertisement. Once a positive match is found, mute the sound/hop channels/play classical music for the known duration of an advert.

You know it's an advert because you've heard it before, right? OK, so we can push buttons too as a backup.

There are a lot of variations on this theme, but they basically rely on songprint being able to recognise a soundtrack relatively quickly. I don't know how practical that is. But if it works, it could be the basis for a usable open source TV addbuster.
