I'm eagerly awaiting the new version expected the first part of this month. Though while waiting, I'd like to begin bulding my database. Since 0.2.6.1 lacks backup facilities, is there any chance I'll lose my already-entered data during an upgrade away from 0.2.6.1?

Sorry, but I didn't have the chance to fnish the next release and then was on vacation in August. I'll try to do it ASAP.
Whether you will lose your data during the upgrade or not depends mainly on your phone. There are some phones that delete the data without asking (I think they are the majority), there are some that will ask you if you want to keep it (e.g. the Nokia 6600) and there are some that just simply keep it. And then there is a more or less generic solution for smart phones where you can backup the database file(s) with a file manager application (e.g. on all the Nokia series 60 phones) and then you can copy it back after the upgrade.
All in all, one of the main reasons for doing this backup facilty is that there isn't a generic solution in the phones yet :).
