More like a coma

It's official. I don't have the time to put into FreePop anymore. It's a damn shame - I wouldn't abandon this project if I could help it, but this year, it's very unlikely that I'm going to be able to give any decent time towards development.

I reckon FreePop has a lot of potential in the hands of someone who has the time. The problem is FreePop hasn't reached critical mass yet, so it requires a lot of dedication which I can no longer provide. If you're reading this and you're interested in picking FreePop up, *please* contact me. I'm more than willing to help get you up to speed, and to lend my advice wherever needed.... read more

Not dead! Really!

Okay, some may have noticed that not much has happened around here in quite a while. The reason for this is that I've been very busy with my final year studies. Because of this I've had very little time (none actually) to work on my beloved FreePop.

This project is not dead. I want to work on this when I get time. Unfortunately I don't have any, and I don't see any significant free time coming up in the near future, thus no work.... read more

FreePop 0.6.0 Released

FreePop is a game inspired by the classic Populous series by Bullfrog. The FreePop 0.6.0 release has a number of improvements, including an array of greatly enhanced sprites, a number of gameplay enhancements, and improved networking. This should be the last major version before complete game rules are implemented such that FreePop is playable as a competitive game.

This package requires ClanLib 0.7.8 and Boost 1.32.0 libraries. Anyone who is interested in the progress of this project is encouraged to download and test this new version. It can be found at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/freepop/freepop-0.6.0.tar.gz?download... read more

FreePop 0.5.0 released

FreePop is a game inspired by the classic Populous series by Bullfrog. The FreePop 0.5.0 release has a number of major internal changes. The system
has now been separated into client and server programs, allowing networking and multiplay. Also, FreePop has migrated to using the ClanLib 0.7 libraries, allowing for much faster development in the future. Many internal annoyances have been cleaned up.... read more

FreePop Awakening

In case anyone is worried, FreePop is not dead. After a hiatus I am getting back to work on FreePop. I've settled on ClanLib now. Hopefully this will be the last library change, and I can get to actually making the game. At the moment I'm working on porting the code I already have to use clanlib and a client/server model. Once this is done and functionality is up the where 0.4 was I'll release it as 0.4.99, and then we can get on with new features!

Current Status and Future Direction for FreePop

I haven't coded on FreePop for a while now. The project itself is still something I would like to see continue, but unfortunately I don't think I have the experience to be able to guide it in the right direction by myself. I'm sure if I tried to I would be reinventing the wheel several times, and thus just getting the project bogged down while trying to work out the kinks in the lower level stuff instead of making a decent game.... read more

FreePop 0.4.0 Released

FreePop is a game inspired by the classic Populous series by Bullfrog. The FreePop 0.4.0 release includes major enhancements over the previous release (0.3.0) such as an improved graphical user interface, and a preliminary entity system which in this release includes basic trees, peeps, and fire columns.
This release now requires the Kyra 2.0.1 libs (which are officially in beta stage, but are quite stable). Anyone who is interested in the progress of this project is encouraged to download and test the new version. Though there is steady progress, those who just want the finished game have a while to wait, yet.
Queries and comments can be sent to the freepop mailing list (freepop-devel@lists.sourceforge.net). Please feel free to comment.

FreePop Web Site Redesign

Recently the FreePop website went under a transformation, giving the different sections their own pages, and generally making the whole thing better structured.
Also, now the News section is linked to the news submitted via the SourceForge system. It's much better to have only one news system for all.
