It appears that Java 6 has been "deprecated" on Apple Mac OS X with the v10.11 (El Capitan) upgrade. For Freeplane stable version 1.3.15 the work arounds that worked with fixes thru v10.10 (Yosemite) became broken again. From the looks of things, trying to stick with Java 6 would appear a losing game, at least for Mac users.
When can users who depend on reliable/stable versions for heavy duty use expect to have a stable version that moves beyond Java version 6 dependency? It's fun for old nerd/geek types to play around making Freeplane & other apps work with OS upgrades, but it interferes with getting needed work done under time pressure of other priorities.
(Penned in the middle of trying to recover from mistake of upgrading from Yosemite to El Capitan on main work machine. Hard Knox University (HKU) all over again; how many times before the lesson is learned?)

Can anyone help me? I have OS 10.10.5 and have just installed Java 8 but Freeplane still reports the version as 1.6. I also get 1.6 when running java -version from the command line

OK, I answered my own question. I have now installed JDK (previously JRE) and it works!
