I noticed that upon opening my mm file, the leftmost node is automatically completely opened, although, looking at the source code, all children and grandchildren and so on are set to hidden.

How come? Opening previous versions, which had one top node less, I see that they, too, open one node completely, albeit a different one, so the problem seems to be common to all versions. As freeplaneTutorial.mm does not have this behavior, I concluded it must be a problem of my particular map. But it is not.

I took a copy of freeplainTutorial.mm, verified that this map opened as it should, i.e. all nodes closed, removed the free-floating nodes and all the nodes on the left side.

The 7 nodes on the right side should serve as model for my own map. By transferring my stuff to this map, I hoped to overcome the unwanted behavior.

Surprise: opening this amputated map, the first branch is fully opened. Try it yourself. It should take only a couple of minutes.

    Well, Jodi told me it is due to my preferences. I cannot change them, though:

    Validation error(s):
    When setting the classpath you have to permit read access on files!

      Concerning that problem: Just check the checkbox
      prefs->plugins->Scripting-> [x] Permit file/read operations

    hello karlk,

    I take this as a bug report about prefs->Environment->On Load="Fold all"
    (as stated here: https://sourceforge.net/p/freeplane/discussion/758437/thread/2de440df/#c715).

    This option is connected to the option "Maximum number of displayed nodes" below:
    If you have On Load="Fold all" and "Maximum number of displayed nodes"=n, then
    it will fold all but n nodes (n nodes will still be displayed).

    So you get the desired behavior by setting n:=1.

    Would it be acceptable to document this in tooltips?

    Best Regards,
    Felix

    Hello Felix,

    Great! This settles the problem on my office box. The maximum number of displayed nodes was set at 20, which must be the default value. I didn't notice this. Next I didn't read your letter good enough, so I set this number to zero, which didn't change the value. Setting it to 1 solved the problem.

    I installed from the same download on my notebook as well, where the German language version was chosen in contrast to the English version on my box. I don't remember, but most probably this was my choice at installation time.

    So I guess the meaning of "Wenn möglich Faltung laden, ansonsten alles einklappen" corresponds to "Load from map or unfold all" - the maximum number of displayed nodes is set to 20 as well here, but I will change this to 1 as well just to play safe.

    By the way, my presentation yesterday was fine, although I overlooked a whole branch. This is due to my use of full-screen screenshots, which pushed the node to the left upper corner, which in turn made it difficult to realize where I am. Centering did help, but was somehow tedious.

    The next time, I will use a storyboard on paper to avoid this mishap. Actually a storyboard would have been a good idea to begin with; I somehow had a storyboard in my head, developed during rehearsal, but I didn't pin it down, which was the real mistake. Jumping back and forth in a map in a real situation with interspersed conversation just requires so much concentration, that this kind of backup should be very helpful indeed.

    Again, thank you all very much for your great work and support!

    Regards
